Colombian Low Cost Carrier Viva Air has announced that it has received long-awaited approval from the Colombian government to restart international flights between Colombia and the United States. The first flights will take place on September 19 between Cartagena, Colombia and Miami, Florida. Domestic flights restarted September 1. Viva, which also operates extensive domestic networks throughout both Colombia and Peru, told Finance Colombia it is only awaiting a green light from the Peruvian government to begin international flights between the two Andean nations.

Travelers to Cartagena via Viva Air may then transfer to domestic flights within Colombia.

Viva Air has been able to weather the 6-month Coronavirus COVID-19 flight ban in Colombia better than rival domestic airline operators, Avianca, LATAM, and EasyFly, all in bankruptcy. Only Viva Air and government owned SATENA survived the flight ban financially solvent.

“As a Colombian airline that does things differently, we are very happy and proud, not only to fly internationally again to take passengers to their preferred travel destinations, but also to be the first to do so. This is proof of the tireless work we have done over the past few months and our commitment to air inclusion of the country and the region with air transport as an essential public service, ” said Viva Air CEO Félix Antelo.

“We are not only the first to fly internationally again, but we are also the first to get approved and certified with biosecurity protocols. We have the ‘Certified Check-In’ biosafety seal and we put our protocols to the test with more than 320 humanitarian repatriation flights carried out.”
