Colombian Tilapia Exports Up 23.8% Over January, 2020. US Remains Primary Destination
During January of this year, exports of Tilapia from Colombia reached $4.8 million USD, an increase of 23.8% compared to the same month of the previous year. According to Colombia’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism (MinCIT), 95.8% of Colombian Tilapia exports are to the United States, with the remaining product shipped to Peru and the United Kingdom.
“The diversification of the export basket is one of the causes we advance from the Ministry of Commerce, and health diplomacy is one of the keys that helps us in that purpose. Our work continues in the admissibility process for 12 other agricultural products such as beef, pork, milk and dairy, passion fruit, fruit pulp, blueberries and bananas, among others. Each one goes to different markets,” said the Deputy Minister of Foreign Trade, Laura Valdivieso Jiménez.
Almost all tilapia in Colombia destined for export is produced in the department of Huila, a mostly agricultural area to the Southeast of Cali.
