Avianca Building Major Aviation “MRO” Aviation Maintenance Facility Outside Of Medellín

The Avianca Aeronautical Center is being built adjacent to the José María Córdova International Airport in Rionegro, Colombia, which is the international airport serving Medellín and the surrounding Antioquia department. This is in line with the size of its fleet, which currently comprises 183 current generation aircraft. Avianca continues to add planes with new technology to the fleet, as well as incorporating the high specialization levels required for their maintenance under global quality standards issued by the authorities regulating the international airline industry.

The construction of the Avianca Aeronautical Center has the approval of the governing bodies of national and international civil aviation, such as the Colombian Civil Aviation Authority, the Federal Aviation Administration of the United States, FAA, the European Aviation Safety Agency, EASA and the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO.

According to the CEO of Avianca Holdings, Fabio Villegas Ramírez: “The establishment and development of the Avianca Aeronautical Center is a decisive step in the consolidation of the Avianca as a source of expertise and as a quality reference for the aeronautical engineering processes in the region. Driven by an experienced team of engineers and technicians, the Avianca Maintenance Center is projected to be one of the most complete specialized aviation facilities in Latin America, being both a generator of employment and development for Colombia.”

Encompassing a total area of 44,300 square meters, the MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) or Avianca Aeronautical Center will have hangars of 8,800 square meters (138 meters wide, 55 meters deep and 19 meters high) where the simultaneous servicing of four single-aisle A320 family, or two wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing B 787-8 or two Airbus A330 will be possible.

The hangars will be equipped with specialized workshops for the repair of components as well as a complete infrastructure with a platform for taxiing aircraft, offices, spare parts warehouses and training rooms with capacity for up to 600 employees, and will provide services to both Avianca and other air carriers.

The building complex is also designed with eco-efficient construction, incorporating advanced systems for rainwater collection, recycling and energy optimization.
