On November fifth, large industrial and commercial corporate energy consumers in Colombia formed the latest “gremio,” or trade association, in order to push back against the high cost of energy, especially electricity, in Colombia. The new trade group, named Asoenergía, is headed by economist and former Colombian ambassador to Venezuela, Maria Luisa Chiappe.
According to an interview given to Portafolio, the group started with 21 founding members. Unlike other gremios that tend to represent a particular industry, Asoenergía is a single purpose group: To advocate and push for lower energy costs, more in line with competing markets in Latin America.
