Medellín Will Host General Assembly of the Organization of American States in June 2019

Medellín will play host to the 2019 General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), the hemisphere-wide non-governmental organization announced this week.

The 49th edition of the annual marquee event, which the OAS said in September would be held in Colombia without specifying a city, will take place over three days from June 26-28.

This will be the third time the General Assembly will be held in the Andean nation, which was also the site of the OAS’s birth when its charter was formalized in Bogotá in 1948.

Luis Almagro, secretary general of the OAS, said Colombia “is a close partner, a friend and collaborator in our organization in all of the issues on our agenda.”

He also again praised the nation for willingly taking in an estimated one million Venezuelans who have fled the deepening humanitarian crisis in their homeland.

“Colombia is an admirable example,” said Almagro. “It represents the best of our values, our unceasing solidarity where there is no place for racism and xenophobia, only for arms open to our neighbors, to those in need.”
