This familiar view of the Capitol’s East Front appeared in Die Gartenlaube, a popular German illustrated weekly newspaper. Published in Leipzig, the periodical was aimed at the middle classes and deemed a “friend of the family,” both for its instructive and entertaining content and generous use of images with text.
