The massive concert is the most high-profile development yet in a high-stakes border stalemate over humanitarian aid that has already led to the death of two people in Brazil.

Duque joined leaders from the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and other nations in formally breaking ties with Maduro in favor of opposition-led National Assembly head Juan Guaidó.

Trump has railed against the spike in coca cultivation in Colombia, focusing on drug trafficking and the Venezuela crisis while largely ignoring the country's peace process.

At the U.N., Duque reiterated his commitment to crack down on illicit coca production, strengthen the country’s peace process, and find a solution to the Venezuelan crisis.

Colombia's coca crop has been expanding by 45% per year since 2013 and reached a recorded high of 171,000 hectares in 2017.

Trump was originally scheduled to make his first trip to Colombia earlier this year during a trip to the Summit of the Americas in Lima. But he abruptly canceled those travel plans at the last minute.

The visit will be a part of the secretary’s larger trip to South America, including stops in Brazil, Argentina, and Chile.

The Israeli embassy in Colombia asked the Andean nation to "reverse the decision,” expressing that it was both “surprised and very disappointed."
