While Trump reaffirmed U.S. support for Colombia, he failed to even mention the nation's peace process in his opening remarks and ramped up rhetoric for the war on drugs.

Avianca head Hernán Rincón says the airline "will continue negotiations with United" to reach an alliance that he believes is in the best interest of the company and shareholders.

Colombia's peace process and the crisis in Venezuela will be on the agenda for President Santos' first visit with President Trump.

While the $450 million USD pledged by Obama has been approved, doubt remains as to whether the same level of assistance will keep arriving over the long term.

Jorge Mejía said he plans to join forces with multiple partners to launch an independent project focused on entrepreneurship.

"This partnership is a critical step towards achieving our vision of positioning ourselves as a global beach lifestyle leader," said Maaji CEO Miguel Piedrahita.

"With the launch of this new route, Avianca becomes the first and only airline to directly link Bogotá with Boston and vice versa," says the airline.

New Colciencias director César Ocampo worked with NASA after earning his doctorate in astrodynamics at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Avianca currently has four weekly flights to Los Angeles, and its upcoming daily route will be operated by a Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
