Blue Marble Microinsurance is renewing its weather index insurance program for smallholder coffee farmers in Colombia and expanding the coverage significantly.

The parametric insurance policies cover higher-than-expected rain and drought during the periods of the year when coffee beans are young and most susceptible to weather shocks.

The policies offered by Nespresso's pilot program are designed for small farms vulnerable to weather fluctuations, price drops, and crop blight.

"Our farmers produce some of the best coffee in the world, but the conflict has meant many have had to leave their farms," says Robert Velez of Colombia's coffee federation.
