Last week, as part of its sustainability strategy, Tecnoglass (NYSE: TGLS) and its subsidiaries began human rights training at its Barranquilla production facilities in alliance with Colombia’s Atlantico department regional ombudsman’s office. Initial training is focused on directors and process area chiefs, and covered human rights in business, conflict resolution and management, among other related topics.

“Human rights education is fundamental to addressing respect and promotion of [human rights]. We can’t require people to be committed to initiatives that they are not aware of, or that demand respect for [principles] if they ignore it. Our role today as a company is to sensitize our employees, in all their roles, in order to empower them for the world we live in, to be informed, assertive and responsible actors,” says Chris Daes, COO of Tecnoglass.

The training includes two sessions, an initial one with the presence of the Atlantico Regional Ombudsman, Miguel Linero De Cambil and the National Director of Promotion and Dissemination, Gisella Arias; and the closing will be run by Colombia’s National Defender, Carlos Camargo Assis (a government position).

“This will be the first training of a cycle of activities planned not only to train the companies, but to leave installed capacity so that the same companies have the power to train their employees,” says Carlos Camargo.

Tecnoglass asserted that these voluntary activities reflect its commitment to sustainability immersed in its culture, decisions, processes, products and governance as an integral part of its business and reaffirms the protection of human rights throughout its value chain for all stakeholders.
