Colombian Unemployment Rate Comes in at 9.1% in June

Unemployment came in at 9.1% in June in Colombia, an uptick from the 8.7% rate registered in the same month of 2017, according to the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE).

This figure brought the second quarter unemployment rate to 9.4%, up from 9.0% for the second quarter last year.

In all, 22.6 million people were employed during June, with urban centers having worse unemployment than rural areas.

For the month, the unemployment rate in Colombia’s 13 largest cities and metropolitan areas was 11.1%. This is also above the same figure for June 2017, when these locations had an employment rate of 10.8%.

For the second quarter, among the largest cities, the lowest unemployment rates were registered on the Caribbean coast in Cartagena (at 7.4%), Barranquilla (7.8%), and Santa Marta (7.8%). The worst-off locations from April to June were the Chocó capital of Quibdó (17.1%), Armenia (16.4%), and Valledupar (14.9%).
