Ecopetrol’s Purple Angel Well Confirms a Proven Gas Column of 520 Meters in Caribbean

Ecopetrol announced today that a well it has an interest in found proven gas presence in Caribbean deep waters. The findings of this Purple Angel-1 well expanded upon the original discovery at the Kronos-1 site in July 2015, confirming a gas column of more than 520 meters (1,700 feet).

The state-controlled Colombian oil giant has a 50% stake in the well, which was drilled to a depth of nearly 4,800 meters. Woodlands, Texas-based operating company Anadarko, also an Ecopetrol partner on their joint Warrior oil well, holds the remaining 50% stake.

“Both wells confirm the potential of this hydrocarbon province, located in the southern Colombian Caribbean,” said Ecopetrol in a statement. “Based on the information obtained from the two wells, it is estimated that the Kronos field has a gas column of at least 520 meters.”

The company said that the Bolette Dolphin drillship was used in the operation, the first of many planned this year by Ecopetrol. Overall, the company expects to drill five wells this year in Colombian Caribbean waters. For its entire exploration investment in 2017, Ecopetrol has allotted some $650 million USD.
