The Frescobaldi have six farms and two restaurants, one in Florence and the other in the Mayfair district of London. Leading an enterprise invoicing over 100 million euros per year, The Marquis Frescobaldi lives in the historic Nipozzano Castle (pictured above) in the town of Chianti, Tuscany overseeing almost 450 acres of vineyards under the European Union’s coveted “Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin (DOCG) designation.”

Chianti Rufina is planted mostly with local Tuscan varieties such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino or Malvasia Nera, though one may also encounter Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and even some Merlot, which allows the vintner to create unique wines noted for their complexity and elegance. Wine historian Oz Clarke says that two are the pillars on which the fame of the famous Frescobaldi winery rests: one is their family wine tradition that far surpasses the seven centuries of history and the second is the 30 generations of successive winemakers who have worked to shepherd these wines through history to our present day, today headed by the brothers Vittorio, Ferdinando and Leonardo Frescobaldi. When the author Dante Alighieri still lived in this land and Boccaccio had not written his famous stories, this family was already bottling wine.

In addition to being winemakers for 30 generations, the Frescobaldi have been politicians, poets, merchants and bankers during the Florentine of the Renaissance. Determined patrons of Brunelleschi’s work, they also financed the popes of Rome as well as the European monarchies, from Henry VIII to Mary Magdalene of Austria. His lineage goes back to the time of Dante Alighieri when Dino Frescobaldi, according to lore, managed to restore the first songs of the Divine Comedy to the poet in exile, who was able to complete and publish his immortal work.
