DESCRIPTION:The Medellín Mayor’s Office\, through its Book Events division\, has announced that over 11 international writers will participate in the 19th annual Book and Culture Festival\, scheduled from September 12th to 21st. This literary and cultural gathering is recognized as one of the most prominent in Latin America. \nAuthors\, editors\, booksellers\, comic artists\, poets\, and literary critics will meet with numerous attendees to exchange ideas and insights during the 10-day event. This free-admission event will take place at the Joaquín Antonio Uribe Botanical Garden and the northern district of the city. \nThe invited international publishing house is Periférica (Spain)\, an independent publisher that has focused on disseminating Latin American literature globally for nearly two decades. Its founder\, Paca Flores\, will lead the delegation to Medellín\, accompanied by already confirmed authors: poet and translator Munir Hachemi (Spain)\, writer and essayist Diamela Eltit (Chile)\, and writer Juan Cárdenas (Colombia). Additionally\, Jorge Carrión\, a Spanish author\, critic\, and essayist known for his deep reflections on the complex relationships between literature and technology\, will also join us from Spain. \nFrom Mexico\, the confirmed writers to date include: Brenda Navarro\, writer and editor; Fabio Morábito\, poet\, short story writer\, and novelist; Dahlia de la Cerda\, author and feminist activist; Sebastián Tonda\, business consultant and writer; and Luis Felipe Fabre\, poet and essayist. \nCuban writer Elaine Vilar will present her work and discuss her experience as a narrator and playwright. SUMMARY:Medellín Flower Festival Launches More Than 200 Connected Events Celebrating Colombia's Floral Industry and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Medellín is preparing to host the 2025 Flower Fair\, which will be held from August 1 to 10. This emblematic event\, rooted in the silletero tradition\, will unite citizens and visitors to enjoy more than 200 public and private activities. The city will be adorned with parades and diverse artistic expressions that will exalt the pride of being a paisa and strengthen the sense of belonging in every corner. \nMayor Federico Gutiérrez Zuluaga reaffirms his commitment to the silleteros and silleteras. In this way\, 535 of them will update their wardrobe\, marking a significant change not seen since 2017. This year\, the updated attire includes pants and shirts for men\, skirts and blouses for women\, as well as traditional accessories such as the cotizas\, the paruma\, the apron\, the hat\, and the kerchief. The district administration will set up 44 grandstands with a total capacity of 22\,000 people per parade\, each with a capacity for 500 attendees. More than 50% of these spaces will be open to the public\, ensuring greater inclusion. \nIn addition\, a special space with capacity for 50 people with reduced mobility will once again be available. The remaining grandstands will be marketed by the bureau to flower fair sponsors and tour operators. During the 10 days\, musical stages will return with artistic programming in each of the 16 communes and five districts\, a way to decentralize this event. These spaces are expected to have an approximate audience of between 10\,000 and 40\,000 attendees per stage. On the other hand\, the inaugural concert will take place on Friday\, August 1st\, in the Obelisco area\, with renowned artists who will be adding to the evening’s musical program\, such as Jorge Celedón\, Fernando González\, and Jessi Uribe\, among others. \nAlso\, the Parque Cultural Nocturno (Night Cultural Park) in Plaza Gardel will feature a program of high-level performances. Each night will be filled with Colombian\, Afro-Colombian\, and bolero music\, as well as a very special moment to pay tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Combo de las Estrellas. In addition\, the Medellín National Trova Festival is now in its 19th year and will have its semifinals on August 1st and 2nd\, in Parque de los Deseos. \nThe grand finale to select the King or Queen of Trova will be on Friday\, August 8th\, in Plaza Gardel. Other notable activities include: the Silleteritos Parade and Sancocho Festival in Santa Elena; the Silleteritos Parade in La Floresta; the Fair to the Rhythm of a Bike Parade; the Dog and Pet Walk; Flower Plazas; Fondas de Mi Tierra (My Land Feasts) at Juan Pablo II Airport; and Florecer: Orchids\, Nature\, and Traditions at the Botanical Garden; among other activities. \nFinally\, according to information from Colombian Immigration\, between 55\,000 and 60\,000 international passengers are expected to arrive during the 2025 Flower Fair\, of which at least 55% will be foreign visitors and non-resident Colombians.\nTerminales Medellín estimates that land transportation passenger arrivals will range between 250\,000 and 260\,000. This commitment energizes the publishing market\, facilitating strategic connections and new commercial opportunities for professionals in the sector. \nIn addition\, the Fair will offer two scenarios designed to expand access to Colombian literature\, such as the Fellowship Program\, which invites seven international literary agents interested in enriching their catalogs with national editorial production. \nThey are Rory Williamson (United Kingdom)\, editor at Pushkin Press\, where he publishes fiction and non-fiction; Baha Sonmez (Turkey)\, general manager of Redhouse and board member of the Turkish Publishers Association; Majid Jafari Aghdam (Iran)\, CEO of Pol Yainci\, combines his experience as an editor\, translator\, writer and poet; Niyazi Khidirov (Azerbaijan)\, international rights manager at Libra Kitab\, a publisher specializing in children’s literature; Massimiliano Bonatto (Italy)\, editor of Spanish and Latin American literature at Polidoro; Corinna Santa Cruz (Germany)\, editor at Buechergilde Gutenberg and specialist in Latin American and Spanish literature; and Benjamin Burguete (France)\, art historian and philosopher in Paris. \nAnd the Librarians’ Mission\, which will allow librarians from various regions to strengthen their collections through specialized advice and purchasing spaces\, ensuring that more readers have access to a diverse and up-to-date offer. \nWithin the specialized Conferences are the Book Forums\, which allow the exchange of ideas and experiences between the actors of the publishing world. This year\, the Book Forums Master Classes will also be strengthened\, an initiative that was born in 2024 and has been vital in offering practical learning to professionals in the sector. And for librarians\, the Fair has the International Meeting of Librarians\, an event designed to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the management and promotion of reading\, strengthening their role as essential mediators between books and the community. \nIn addition to this\, the International Meeting of Booksellers will be held again so that these important actors in the book chain can share strategies and challenges of the sector. For its part\, the Books for Children and Young People Meeting will bring together publishers specialized in children’s and young people’s literature to discuss trends and opportunities. Also\, translation and illustration will have their space with the Forum of Literary and Editorial Translation\, the Forum of Comic Professionals\, FILBo Ilustra-Ilustropía and the long-awaited portfolio review\, where Colombian illustrators will be able to present their work to publishers. \nThe FILBo will be a meeting point for industry leaders with the Book Fairs Network Meeting\, the National Meeting of Proofreaders and FILBo Emprende\, which will promote publishing ventures with training and commercial exhibition. The International Copyright Seminar will open a key space for debate on the protection of works\, while the FILBo Ilustra Master Classes will bring the best artists closer to the community.
